Nationwide High School Student Program
Are you a high school or college student who wants to expand your knowledge in the STEM fields? Our experts are looking for learners and innovators to collaborate in cutting-edge research, engineering, development, and analysis projects to help make the world safer.

At MITRE, we empower our students to discover, create, and lead in the science, engineering, technology, and mathematics fields. As part of our student programs, we are offering paid summer 2022 internships in these areas. (*See NOTE for full eligibility requirements)

As a student researcher at MITRE, you will join our multigenerational team of mentors and experts, who are motivated to help you realize your maximum potential.

*NOTE: To qualify for these Nationwide High School summer internships, student applicants must be current freshmen in high school (9th graders) through juniors in college. Also, qualified students must be at least the state minimum working age of 14 years old before commencing work in June 2022. If you fall outside this grade level and age range, please do not apply for the positions described here, but instead consider applying to one of the other high school or undergraduate level positions advertised on our Student Programs page.

Application Process: Use the links above to choose the MITRE location to which you would like to apply. To apply for a position, a student must submit a resume. Certain items are required on the resume. Applications do not transfer between locations, so double-check to be sure you have selected the correct location before submitting.

Application Deadlines: Use the links in the location table above to check the deadlines for each early high school internship. Registration will close at 11:59 pm EST on each respective location's specified deadline. After you have filled out the online application, be sure to click the submit button before the submission deadline. If you do not, your application will not be complete and will NOT be considered.

Student Availability: Students who wish to participate must be available to work for the full span of the summer program listed for the location of interest (usually 8 weeks), with only a few discretionary days off. No days off are permitted during the first and last weeks of each respective location's program. Use the location table above to view the dates of each program by location.

Eligibility: At the conclusion of the 2021-2022 academic year, before commencing work in June 2022, qualified students must be rising 10th and 11th graders through juniors in college but will not have advanced in their education past being a rising senior in college in summer 2022 and be at least the state minimum working age of 14 years old. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Students hired for the summer 2022 Nationwide High School Program will be subject to all COVID-19 safety protocols applicable to MITRE employees. This may include, but is not limited to health-related acknowledgments, and/or COVID-19 vaccinations.

Which locations are available for the Nationwide High School Program?
The summer opportunities are in Bedford, MA, McLean, VA and Tampa, FL. If other locations become available, they will be posted here by February 25th.

Do I have to participate in the Internship full-time and for the entire summer?
Yes, the high school internship is a full time (40 hours/week) paid position, and students must attend for the duration of the program at their selected location. Other activities, such as summer school or additional work, can be planned for after 5 p.m.

Does MITRE provide transportation?
No. MITRE does not provide transportation for these positions. (MITRE's McLean Campus is located near the Silver Metro Line supported by a Metro/MITRE Interoffice Shuttle; MITRE's Bedford Campus is accessible via a dedicated shuttle from Alewife T Station).

What are the start and end dates of the internship?

Is there a GPA requirement?
Yes, the minimum cumulative GPA requirement is a 3.0 or higher.

How are students assigned to the different placements available?
Students are assigned to technical tasks and expert adult mentors based upon the students' technical area of expertise and interests listed in their resume. Placements also can be influenced by students' interviews.

What are the expected core hours of work?
MITRE's regular hours of work are from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, students can talk to their direct supervisor about flexible work arrangements based on their commute. For all work locations, students who wish to participate must be available to work during the entire span of the program (8 weeks at most locations), with only a few days off. Hours of work will be Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. No days off are permitted during the first and last weeks of each respective location's program.

What technical areas are available in this program?
Technical areas are decided at each MITRE location. All technical areas are not available at every location.

When can I expect to hear whether I am being considered for the program?
If you have not received an update about your candidacy, you are still under consideration. MITRE plans to have all internship decisions made by April 2022. If you are not selected to move forward in the process, you will be notified within 2 weeks of this date.

What if I don't receive an Internship offer?
If you are not accepted into the program this summer, continue to learn and enhance your skills and abilities, and we encourage you to apply again next year.
